Yes. Every animal in our care regularly receives all age- and species-appropriate vaccines to keep our human friends and other animals safe from diseases. In particular, all cats on the main cafe floor are vaccinated against rabies and FVRCP (more below) before they are available for public interaction.
In rare cases guests may receive a bite or a scratch. We recommend thoroughly rinsing the wound with soap and warm water and leaving it uncovered. Should you have any concerns please see your doctor immediately.
In terms of pathogens that are communicable to other animals: We work extremely hard to minimize infections and illness for animals in our care through strict sanitation standards and robust medical protocols for prevention, monitoring, quarantine, and treatment; however, some degree of exposure is inevitable when cats are around other cats in a shelter environment. Each cat undergoes an FVRCP vaccination series which protects them against a combination of feline viruses: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, and Feline Panleukopenia (commonly known as parvo/feline distemper). They also routinely undergo treatment for common parasites. A member of our staff can address any specific concerns you may have before you bring one of our animals home!
