Do not immediately assume a stray cat has no owner. Even a cat that looks terrible could have someone looking for them. After checking for any obvious sign of ownership such as a collar or tag, follow these steps if the cats is friendly and handleable.
Bring the cat inside — Everything is easier when the cat is safe and contained — bathrooms work great!
Scan for a microchip — Your local veterinary clinic should be able to do this for free, but it helps to call in advance. Having trouble? Reach out to help@bbawc.org to schedule a time to bring the cat to the Brooklyn Cat Cafe for a scan.
Share the news — post a found pet with a photo and search the lost pet online listings:

Post and hand out flyers — not everyone who owns a pet is online. You can generate easy to print flyers at pawboost and Petco Love Lost
If no owner is found — time to find a forever home for your new friend!
